The 8th YISHU AWARDS FOR CRITICAL WRITING ON CONTEMPORARY CHINESE ART

May 03, 2019  http://yishu-online.com

Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art is pleased to announce the recipients of the 8th Yishu Awards for Critical Writing on Contemporary Chinese Art. For 2019, we are delighted to present the awards to Kao Chien-Hui (Tainan/Naperville, Illinois) and Shao Yiyang (Beijing).

The Yishu Awards were established in 2010 to encourage and recognize writers who are making an outstanding contribution to understanding the history and current issues that surround the vast realm of contemporary Chinese art. The award is in the amount of $5000 CAD. There is no submission process and recipients are given no prior notice that they are being considered. Recipients may live anywhere in the world. Yishu asks two highly respected individuals in the field of contemporary Chinese art to each recommend one recipient. In 2019, we invited Lai Hsiangling and Xu Bing as recommenders.

Lai Hsiangling, currently Director of Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab and formerly a curator at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, recommended Kao Chien-Hui, an art critic, history scholar and curator who has written several books on contemporary Asian art and is currently a visiting professor in the Doctoral Program in Art Creation and Theory, Tainan National University of the Arts.

Lai Hsiangling commented that:

Kao Chien-Hui is one of the most important art writers in Taiwan, continuously focusing on art research and criticism that extends beyond her curatorial work and teaching. She has covered a wide range of topics including art history, conceptual shifts, art criticism, ecological observation, curatorial analysis, art sociological research, and the development of international art trends. As a senior observer and critic, Kao Chien-Hui’s methodology emphasizes the close relationship between art production, social developments, and historical evolution. In her recently published book, The Production Line of Contemporary Art: Cases of Creative Practice and Social Engagement (Art & Collection Group Ltd. Taipei), she asserts that “by examining the production of art exhibitions and the interpretation of contemporary art, as well as the antagonisms between art and society, one can discern the evolution of the sociology of art and how contemporary individuals approach the world.” Kao Chien-Hui’s writing is poetic and accessible; her art criticism is incisive, informed, thoughtful, and provocative. She has made an outstanding contribution to the dissemination of, and research on, contemporary art.

Xu Bing, among of the most respected artists and educators within China and internationally, served as the Vice President of the China Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and is now a professor and Director of the Academic Committee. He currently lives and works in Beijing and New York. His work has been exhibited internationally in many of the most esteemed museums and galleries. Xu Bing recommended Shao Yiyang, a professor of art history and theory, deputy chair of the School of Humanities at the Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing, and a member of the executive committee for the Chinese World Congress of Art History (CIHA). She received her Ph.D. in 2003 from the Art History and Theory Department at the University of Sydney. Since 2004, she has been teaching in the Art History Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Her publications In Chinese include books such as Global Perspectives In Contemporary Art (2019), The 20th Century: Modern And Contemporary Art (2018), Beyond Postmodern (2012), and Art After Postmodern (2008).

Xu Bing stated that:

Shao Yiyang research is adept at combining art criticism, art history, and theory. Her research focuses primarily on influential Chinese and Western contemporary artists. She strives to produce in-depth art interpretation and avoids language that is subjective, emotional, or superficial. Therefore, her writing has the capacity to intervene into social realities, and her criticism of cultural phenomena and academic research is able to transcend the barriers between the traditional and contemporary, Chinese and Western, and research on art history and art criticism. Her 2016 essay “Whither Art History?” was published in Art Bulletin, an international journal of art history and theory, and was the first time a Chinese art history scholar was selected for publication in this prominent journal.

An Awards Reception and Panel Discussion for the 8th Yishu Awards for Critical Writing on Contemporary Chinese Art will take place on Friday, May 31 at 6:00 pm at the Vancouver Art Gallery, fourth floor. It will be the first time the Awards have been presented in Vancouver.

The panel discussion will include the four recommenders and recipients who will address “Art and Agency in Contemporary China and the Global Context.” Agency refers to the ability of individuals to act and to make change. Can art do this? And how? The questions will be based on what the role of visual art is in an age of global political, ecological, and technological uncertainty and how can it contribute to and engage in these issues. These issues have entered areas within the sciences and humanities, so how is visual art a relevant part of them? And does art have an educational function that extends beyond an aesthetic one? The panel will begin at 6:30 and the discussion will be conducted in English.

Yishu Awards for Critical Writing on Contemporary Chinese Art is presented by Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art (yishu-online.com), founded in 2002 by the Art & Collection Group Ltd., Taiwan, and its President, Katy Hsiu-chih Chien. Yishu, the first English language journal devoted to contemporary Chinese art, is edited and designed in Vancouver and published in Taipei.
