The Barcelona Design Week (BDW), created by BCD Barcelona Design Centre in 2006, is an unmissable event on design, creativity and innovation in Barcelona and one of the most important Design Weeks of the international calendar (Best architecture, design and technology events).

The 14th edition of BDW, to be held from 12 to 20 June, is directed by BCD Barcelona Centre de Disseny, organised by FAD Fostering Arts and Design and BCD, in collaboration with Museu del Disseny, driven by Barcelon City Council, and supported by the Government of Catalonia.

The BDW 2019 will open its doors under the theme ‘Transitions’ with a very clear goal: to bring design to people and involve the industry’s main actors in the city to share Barcelona’s design vitality with the world and the city, enhance its social and economic importance and invite the citizens to experience it. Over a week all design lovers will enjoy an extensive programme encompassing more than 120 activities open to the city, prominent among them exhibitions, workshops, talks, open doors, but also activities aimed more at the professional public to create business opportunities and facilitate the exchange of knowledge.

The profession, the young talent, the recognition of design excellence and culture provided by FAD. The enterprise, strategic value in terms of innovation, sustainability and competitiveness as well as the promotion of the Barcelona city brand, led by BCD. And the Museu del Disseny as the principal collaborator, contributing its heritage and public dimension together with its dissemination capacity.

People, societies, even the world order, are in permanent transition. In fact, we are right in the middle of a necessary and urgent change on a global level with a goal as simple as the survival of humanity. A transition from a linear economy model to a circular economy model for an ecologically sustainable world. Furthermore, cities, as a complex environment, where the multiple interests, conflicts and challenges to be overcome are created, are transforming towards a digital, smart city, innovative and highly technological model, which must put people’s well-being at the heart of it.

Design is, in this sense, a priority discipline if we want to achieve these goals. How should everything around us be designed in order for this desired transition towards a circular economy to occur, this change towards more just and developed societies and putting this world in its natural balance?

At Barcelona Design Week 2019 we want to reflect and share with citizens the capabilities of design in contributing to any transition in a manner aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (ODS). After all, we are all part of this transition.

«The Best Design of the Year» organized by the FAD has become an unmissable event if one wishes to understand what is happening in the world of design, architecture, fashion and art today, with a selection of the best works produced in 2018.

This year the show is mounted in collaboration with the Barcelona’s Design Museum and it features the shortlisted and prize-winning works of the awards organized by the FAD associations, the most long-lived and most widely recognized in the different disciplines of design: the ADG Laus Awards for Graphic Design and Visual Communication (ADG-FAD); the FAD Awards for Architecture and Interior Design (ARQUIN-FAD); the ArtsFAD Awards for artistic creation (A-FAD); and the MODA-FAD Awards for fashion design and industry, as well as the Habitácola Awards for architecture and design students.

International Pavilion

This year, Barcelona Design Week invites three countries to show their creative potential and to interpret “transitions” from different perspectives.

Agentina presents “Paisajes lúdicos” by Leticia Paschetta, an installation that explores the boundaries between art, design and architecture to create intense experiences through spaces, defying our perceptions with the great objective of lasting in the mind by way of old memories.

Brazil presents a contemporary furniture exhibition called “O sentar do Brasileiro” which invites the visitor to reflect on how we sit from different points of view: celebrations, work, religion and relaxation. This show is collaborated by the Consulate-General of Brazil

Italy will present a collection of drawings by Mario Trimarchi under the name “La ricerca della frontiera tra l’utile e l’inutile”. Trimarchi’s drawings accompany the purpose of his products, constructing an invisible boundary between ideas and reality, between dreams and the truth of things. The drawings are testimonies of his poetic search and often reveal more than what a simple product can express by itself.

“3 Future Ways of Living 2020”

Trend expert Gudy Herder and food designer Elsa Yranzo join forces to bring “Trends & Food” to the Barcelona Design Week 2019.

The event consists of two parts:

We will start with “3 Future Ways of Living 2020”, an in-depth conference where lifestyle trends such as ‘Regeneration’, ‘Ceremony’ and ‘Knowmadism’ are shared providing core messages of each, explanations why they are relevant today and tomorrow, revealing materials and corresponding colour palettes.

Afterwards, the audience will participate in a gastronomic installation designed and inspired by the three trends, in order to interact with new materials, stimulate the six senses and reflect on the values and change of today’s society.
