ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO TO DEACCESSION THREE HUNDRED CHINESE ARTWORKSThe Art Institute of Chicago is planning to unload more than three hundred works from its collection of Chinese art at Christie’s New York this September. The institution is selling objects dating from the Song to the Qing dynasty at a live sale on September 12 and an online auction taking place from September 10 to September 17.

“Our curators are always evaluating and refining the museum’s collection,” the Chicago museum said in a statement provided to the Chicago Tribune. “This auction allows us to deaccession a number of works in areas where we have significant breadth and depth and the proceeds will return to the Asian Art department’s acquisition fund.”

A global tour of highlights from the collection, which includes a strong selection of Ming and Qing dynasty porcelain, began on May 23 in Hong Kong, and will make several stops throughout Asia prior to the sales. The institute already sold twenty-two works of Chinese jade from its holdings at a Sotheby’s sale during Asia Week earlier this month. Spread across eight auctions, the auction house sold more than eight hundred Asian works of art, which netted more than $45 million.
