NYCxDESIGN and ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair), with hundreds of thousands of attendees and designers from across the globe converging on the city’s five boroughs from May 10-22; much of the mid-May action happens in Manhattan, but Brooklyn weighs in with a full calendar of collective events in hotspots like the Navy Yard and Industry City that serve as design hubs 365 days a year.

In its seventh year, NYCxDESIGN is a collaboration between the city and a steering committee composed of design institutions, retailers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, curators, educators, editors and designers to promote and spotlight one of the world’s largest design hubs–a city that’s home to almost 8,000 design establishments and 53,000 design professionals. NYC is also home to 10 of the most prominent design and architecture schools in the country, and a special part of the upcoming celebration is the inclusion of graduate student events, giving the next generation of designers an exciting opportunity for exposure. It’s a great way to get an early introduction to undiscovered future stars.

Last year, over 347,000 people attended events throughout the city. In addition to launches and showcases, there are parties galore, of course. Neighborhood design shops and studios break out the bubbly for visitors, and there are rooftop shindigs and building-wide loft soirees.

DESIGN PAVILION will return to Times Square for NYCxDESIGN, that will be filled with performance spaces, interactive and information kiosks. New outdoor furniture from the Times Square Design Lab will also be making an appearance, as will competition for public-space furniture. Sound & Vision, a two-week long show from the American Design Club on the confluence of sound, technology, and design will use the area as staging.

Tiny House – a mini home that Brooklyn artist Fernando Mastrangelo has built from recycled materials – is among the installations at Times Square for Design Pavilion. Others are a 60-foot-long yacht that will be docked in the public space, and a group of benches by local designer Joe Doucet. Transforming sleep pods by Resource Furniture, a solar decathlon-winning prefab home from Virginia Tech and DXA Studio, and last but not least, the egg-shaped, solar- and wind-powered tiny home called Ecocapsule.

Lee Borthwick

Scottish born, London-based installation artist Lee Borthwick brings a new collection of work to ICFF for her debut appearance at the show. “Wanderings” a series of two unique wall-hanging pieces, takes the aesthetic of her signature wood and mirror tapestries into more sculptural compositions, whilst retaining the tranquil, therapeutic qualities for which her work is renowned.

“In combining manmade and natural materials and siting these objects, both inside and outside, I generate tangible experiences between the viewer, object and the environment. What began as a poetic notion of ‘reflecting sky into wood’ soon stemmed a creative practice enriched with purity, provenance and sentiments of place. My clients often tell me that my work has provided a stunning centrepiece to their space, the combination of light, reflection and rustic wood striking just the right balance.”

Lee trained at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, Scotland and the Royal College of Art in London, England, before starting her practice in 2009. She quickly built a reputation for internal and external installations combining mirror, cut precisely to the natural shapes of wood. Each piece is hand-fabricated, with hundreds - and sometimes several thousand - components painstakingly cut and assembled by hand.

Kristjana S Williams

Icelandic artist Kristjana S Williams debuts at ICFF in New York. During May, Kristjana and her team will be showcasing the wallcoverings, globes and fabrics that have already taken the UK and Europe by storm. In keeping with the artist’s whimsical vision that inspires her artwork, they take their inspiration from nature, reimagining an abundance of flora and fauna in fantastical settings.
